How to Save Your Boss
Have you ever seen a superior heading straight for a brick wall with no idea that he is about to crash? If so, you know that it is agonizing and maddening to watch people who are about to undo themselves. But, you also know it can be dangerous to tell the boss he or she is about to make a major mistake.
According to writer Joanna Krotz in her piece titled “How to tell the boss he’s wrong?” on the Microsoft Small Business Center Web site, there are a few things you can do to soften the blow and make sure you don’t ruin your career when you oppose your superior:
Don’t go in to blast the boss. Make sure you’ve got your head and heart in the right place. Know that you are doing what you are doing for the good of everyone. Center yourself and keep your cool.
Make sure you know your goal. Going in to offer criticism is probably not a good idea, if you don’t have information to back up what you’re saying, or an action plan in mind.
Engage in a true conversation. That means you’re going to have a fair amount of real listening to do. You obviously have a strong opinion about what you’re discussing or you wouldn’t have bothered to bring it up. But keeping an open mind and listening to your boss’s perspective is very important.
